Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Naturopathic PMS Treatment

Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is a combination of hormonally induced symptoms that occur before your period. PMS can be mild or severe and may last up to a week. Common PMS symptoms include breast tenderness, mood swings, fatigue, headaches, irritability, low moods or depressive symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, night sweats, diarrhea, or constipation.

Significant emotional symptoms with PMS is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The hallmarks of PMDD are severe depression, anxiety, and mood changes.

Estrogen and progesterone levels peak after ovulation, then decline as menstruation approaches. These changes in hormone levels influence neurotransmitters and other brain chemicals, increase inflammation, raise cortisol (stress), lower your immunity, and affect your metabolism.

PMS can worsen as hormone fluctuations become more extreme in perimenopause, and the difference in estrogen and progesterone also increases, resulting in estrogen dominance. A classic symptom of estrogen dominance is worsening PMS. In addition to worsening PMS symptoms in perimenopause, your PMS symptoms might change month to month.
