Insomnia

Naturopathic Insomnia Treatment

Sleep patterns can change dramatically in perimenopause and menopause. Insomnia is a common and frustrating symptom in menopause.

Difficulties in falling asleep and/or staying asleep start to appear in the perimenopausal years when your hormones are beginning to shift. The loss of estrogen and progesterone causes night sweats that can disrupt your sleep and negatively impacts your overall stress levels. Your nervous system and adrenals – the glands that respond to stress – are heavily affected in perimenopause and menopause.

Your stress levels are naturally higher in menopause due to the hormone changes. Unfortunately, this can manifest as insomnia. The sleepless nights only add to your overall stress.

Despite insomnia being a common symptom in menopause, there are solutions. Managing stressors in other areas of your life, adjusting your nutrition, modifying your training, and saying “no” to additional tasks will all support your sleep. Hormone testing and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could be an option for some women as HRT can be very helpful for insomnia.
