Bioidentical Hormone Therapy
Naturopathic Bioidentical Hormone Therapy
Bioidentical hormone therapy is HRT that uses hormones that are structurally identical to the hormones your body makes or used to make. Using hormones that are similar in molecular structure as what your body produces has shown to be safer with fewer side effects and risks.
Not all hormone therapies are the same, and HRT needs to be customized to your specific body to be effective and safe. There are a variety of ways to use HRT that include using commercially available prescriptions and compounding pharmacies.
Many opinions and fears surround HRT. Part of the confusion has to do with a large, popular study in the ‘90s on HRT, where preliminary results were misreported. Despite significant reanalysis, and enormous amounts of updated research since then, apprehension remains. Dr. Hamilton wrote more about that study HERE.
What is known and validated by extensive research is that HRT is safe and effective when it’s tailored to the individual. HRT is exceedingly effective in managing menopausal symptoms and reducing the risks of developing dementia, osteoporosis, heart disease, and even breast cancer!
Not everyone needs or wants hormones, but it’s important to me that every woman has the information to make the best-informed decision for herself. The exact hormones, how they are administered, when they are initiated, and how long they are used are all important pieces to the decision.
If you are struggling with perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, you could be a candidate for HRT. Even if your perimenopausal and postmenopausal symptoms are mild, but you know you’re at a higher risk for osteoporosis or neurodegenerative diseases, for example, starting HRT early may lower your risk. If you’re not sure if you should be on HRT or have questions about your current HRT regime, schedule a visit with Dr. Hamilton to talk about your options and how to best support your body and transition through menopause.
