Saint Patrick’s Day is a time to wear green, look out for a shamrock, and eat delicious green foods. The traditional Irish fare on Saint Patty’s Day is corned beef and cabbage – but we encourage you to branch out and enjoy something else delicious during this special day.
For the Love of All That’s Green
Green veggies are so good for you that we thought we would write a little love letter to all of the green goodness out there. Green herbs, fruits, and vegetables all contain vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy. While you have probably always been told that leafy greens (like cabbage!) are good for you, pretty much any fruit, veggie, or herb that is naturally green is packed with vital nutrients.
With that in mind, here are some greens you might not think about every day – but we encourage you to give them a try this Saint Patrick’s Day and all year long:
- Herbs like basil, parsley, and oregano
- Leafy greens like Swiss chard, mustard greens, watercress, rapini, endive, kohlrabi, Kai-lan, and fennel
- Fruits like Tomatillos, kiwis, and limes
- Matcha
- Regular or Romanesco broccoli
- Artichokes
- Celeriac or celery
- Leeks
- Fiddleheads
- Asparagus
- Edamame
All of the above green foods can be added to many traditional Saint Patrick’s Day recipes, or you can make your own tradition by creating something special this year.
So, go green inside and out this Saint Patrick’s Day! You’ll still be as seasonal as a pint of green beer – but you’ll feel a lot healthier.
